Agate is a variety of quartz (silica),
chiefly chalcedony. The stone was given its name Agate, because of its
discovery along the shore line of the river Achates sometime between the 4th
and 3rd centuries BC. Agates may be
found in various kinds of rock, specially in volcanic rocks. |

It is known as "aqaq" or "agag" in Persian.
Shia Muslims often wear an agate ring on the right hand, the stone engraved
with the name of Allah, Ali, or the names of the other eleven Imams. Some
believe agate is a crystal whose powers can be used for love, mental
